Biological & Biomimetic Dentist in Cuenca, Ecuador

Meet Dr. Grace Ordóñez

30 Years of Experience | Over 15,000 Patients Treated | ACESS Certified | GringoPost Award Winner for 8 Consecutive Years

For more than three decades, Dr. Grace Ordóñez has helped patients from Ecuador, the United States, Canada, and around the world restore their oral health, function, and confidence through dentistry grounded in experience, integrity, and genuine respect for every patient.

Her career began in the field of complex restorative dentistry, performing crowns, bridges, dental implants, and full mouth rehabilitations. Over time, however, her professional philosophy evolved toward a more conservative, biological, and preservation focused approach to dental care.

Today, before asking how a procedure should be performed, Dr. Grace first asks whether it is truly necessary.

Her professional philosophy is simple:

I do not perform unnecessary procedures. Every treatment decision is based on what the patient’s body genuinely needs.

That philosophy guides her modern practice, which combines biological, biomimetic, and minimally invasive dentistry. Her goal is always to preserve natural teeth whenever possible, use biocompatible materials, and provide treatments designed to support long term health.

The Mouth Does Not Work in Isolation

Biological dentistry is based on a fundamental principle: oral health is an essential part of overall health.

Today, we understand that chronic gum inflammation, certain dental infections, and some materials historically used in dentistry may influence various processes throughout the body. For this reason, every evaluation goes far beyond the teeth alone.

Dr. Grace considers factors such as systemic inflammation, breathing patterns, sleep quality, nutrition, oral microbiome health, chewing function, and each patient’s previous dental history.

When mercury amalgam fillings need to be removed, she follows the internationally recognized SMART protocol developed by the IAOMT, which incorporates specific safety measures during amalgam removal. She also works with biocompatible materials and metal free ceramic restorations designed to integrate more harmoniously with the body.

Education and Continuing Professional Development

Dr. Grace holds ACESS certification and continues advanced training in biological dentistry, biomimetic dentistry, minimally invasive dentistry, and next generation biocompatible restorative materials.

Her commitment to clinical excellence includes maintaining high international standards of care while continuing to pursue educational opportunities and professional development aligned with leading global healthcare standards.

GraceCare: Smile for All

Dr. Grace’s commitment to health extends beyond her private practice.

More than five years ago, in partnership with the Cuenca Foundation, she founded GraceCare – Smile for All, a community outreach initiative dedicated to providing free dental care to underserved populations with limited access to oral healthcare services.

Because quality dental care should not be a privilege—it should be an opportunity available to more people.

Trusted Dentistry for Locals and Expats in Cuenca

A Dental Experience Designed for International Patients

Having lived in the United States for several years, Dr. Grace is fluent in English, allowing international patients to communicate comfortably and confidently from their very first consultation.

Many patients seek her expertise when looking for a second opinion. They may have received treatment recommendations they do not fully understand, been advised to extract teeth they hope to save, or received treatment plans they feel may be more extensive than necessary.

Her goal is to provide clarity, explain every available option, and help patients make informed and confident decisions about their health. This patient centered philosophy has earned her recognition from Ecuador’s expatriate community, which has honored her with the GringoPost Award for eight consecutive years as one of the country’s most recommended dentists.

A Complete Team Working Under One Philosophy

The clinic brings together a multidisciplinary team of specialists who share the same clinical philosophy and maintain continuous communication throughout patient care.

Patients have access to a comprehensive range of services, including dental implants, restorative dentistry, ceramic crowns and bridges, orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, oral surgery, and treatment for conditions related to mouth breathing and airway health.

This coordinated approach creates a more efficient and convenient experience, particularly for patients traveling from abroad who prefer to address their dental needs in one location.

A Philosophy Built on Trust

Dr. Grace believes that great dentistry is about more than treating teeth.

It is about listening, educating, and guiding each patient so they can make informed decisions about their health.

Because when experience, science, and compassionate care come together, the result is more than a healthy smile—it is a better quality of life.

UNESCO Historic Center — World Cultural Heritage

~30 min walk

Declared UNESCO: December 1, 1999 · Parque Calderón · Centro

Cuenca's heart is unique in Latin America: 224 hectares of colonial architecture perfectly preserved for over 400 years. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception with its iconic blue tile domes, the 16th-century Old Cathedral, cobblestone streets and over 200 heritage buildings.

Founded on April 12, 1557 on the ruins of Tomebamba — the second most important city of the Inca Empire — Cuenca was built following the urban grid ordered by Emperor Charles V. UNESCO declared it a World Cultural Heritage Site on December 1, 1999, recognizing that it illustrates "the perfect implementation of Renaissance principles in the Americas" and the exceptional fusion of Cañari, Inca and Spanish cultures.

★ 4.3/5 · 908 reviews · Calle Larga and Av. Huayna Cápac

The most visited museum in Ecuador with 185,000 visits in 2024. More than a museum: a cultural complex integrating Inca ruins, archaeological park, theater, library with 55,000 volumes and an ethnobotanical garden.

Founded in 1978, Pumapungo ("The Puma's Gate") stands on the remains of the great Inca administrative and ceremonial center of Tomebamba. Its permanent halls include ethnography of Ecuador's peoples, Cañari and Inca archaeology, colonial baroque art and numismatics. Its rarest piece: the gold Conopas — the largest in the Andean world — discovered during excavations between 1981 and 1990. Walking through its open-air archaeological park is one of the most authentic experiences the city offers.

The Monastery of the Immaculate Conception was built in stages since the late 17th century. Biological Dentistry

Biological Dentistry · Cuenca, Ecuador

Your mouth is not an island. It's part of your whole body.

Biological dentistry does not replace traditional dentistry — it evolves it. Every treatment at Dr. Grace's practice considers its impact on your systemic health: what we put in your mouth matters.

🏅 SMART Certified · IAOMT — Safe mercury amalgam removal · Cuenca, Ecuador

🧠 50%

of a dental amalgam is pure mercury — a neurotoxin that the brain and nervous system absorb silently over years

🦠 80%

of chronic diseases have an inflammatory component — and the mouth is one of its most overlooked sources

The Approach

Dentistry that treats the whole patient, not just the teeth

Biological dentistry — also known as holistic or integrative dentistry — recognizes the direct connection between oral health and the health of the entire body.

Unlike the conventional approach, which treats isolated symptoms, we investigate root causes, use 100% biocompatible materials, and avoid introducing toxins through dental treatments.

At Dr. Grace's practice, this is how we work every single day — with every patient, with every procedure.

Oral Health → Systemic Health

What happens in your mouth has demonstrated consequences on:

❤️ Cardiovascular System — Oral bacteria linked to arterial inflammation and heart disease.

🧠 Neurological System — Mercury from amalgams can accumulate in nerve and brain tissue.

🛡️ Immune System — Non-biocompatible materials trigger chronic low-grade inflammatory responses.

⚖️ Endocrine System — Certain metals and dental compounds interfere with hormonal balance.

🦷 Oral Microbiome — Oral bacterial health directly impacts the gut and immune function.

What We Do — Real Practice, Not Marketing

Systemic Protocol

This is how we work

🏅 IAOMT Certification · SMART Protocol

Why does it matter how amalgams are removed?

The strongest scientific evidence indicates that, following inhalation of mercury vapor — the primary form of exposure comes from amalgams — the organs that accumulate the most mercury are: brain and central nervous system, kidneys, liver and endocrine glands including the pituitary. That is why the manner in which amalgams are removed is critically important.

The IAOMT SMART protocol is the only internationally validated standard for this removal. Dr. Grace is one of the very few dentists in Ecuador certified in this protocol.

The protocol includes:

1

Full patient protectionRubber dam, supplemental oxygen, complete facial covering.

2

Sectioning techniqueAmalgam is cut into large chunks to minimize vapor aerosolization.

3

High-speed evacuationSuction with HEPA and activated carbon filters throughout the procedure.

4

Toxic waste managementAmalgam waste is handled as toxic material — never disposed of in drains.

5

Biocompatible restorationImmediately replaced with 100% metal-free and BPA-free materials.

How It Began · 1996

Caring for smiles, transforming lives

In 1996, an initiative was born that has profoundly shaped Dr. Grace's life. When she learned that several children were spending the days before Christmas collecting garbage at the dump in El Valle parish, in Cuenca, she decided to gather toys with the help of friends and colleagues to give them a different Christmas.

Since then, every year, thanks to the generosity of many people, she has brought toys, clothing, food, and warmth to children from vulnerable and remote communities — and served through free dental care and other acts of solidarity alongside Cuenca Foundation, Fundación Mujeres con Éxito, and Hogar Miguel León.

Because a healthy smile, a caring gesture, and an outstretched hand can transform a child's life.

Planting smiles

More than three decades of love in action

Before GraceCare had a name, it already existed as a quiet impulse. Since 1996, Dr. Grace has traveled to remote communities, delivered gifts to children who rarely received them, and offered her time and expertise without asking for anything in return. Together with Cuenca Foundation, Fundación Mujeres con Éxito and Hogar Miguel León, she has built more than three decades of silent, committed service. This collage is the visual memory of those years.

Active case · 2026 — Cuenca Foundation · Cuenca, Ecuador

Víctor, 9 years old

In collaboration with Cuenca Foundation

Víctor came to our clinic through Cuenca Foundation with a history of mouth breathing associated with a cleft lip. He presented with significant sleep disturbances, severe nail-biting (onychophagia), irritability, anxiety, difficulties with attention and concentration, as well as poor academic performance.

As part of his treatment, a nasal breathing re-education program was implemented, along with correct tongue posture training and exercises to promote a healthier breathing pattern. Víctor has shown very positive progress: improved nighttime rest, a notable reduction in nail-biting, calmer behavior, and better academic performance.
